CityU opens library to book-lovers
City University (CityU) will be sharing its library resources through a Friends of the Library scheme which is open to people who love books.
CityU is holding a book exhibition until July 12 which features books donated by Roderick Woo Bun, a former CityU council member.
Mr Woo has donated more than 8,000 volumes of books to the library, spanning a wide range that includes law, Chinese philosophy, fine arts and Oriental and western literature.
He has also donated rare books, such as the Dongpo Qi Ji, which was published in about 1908 and has traditional thread-stitched bindings. Other books from Mr Woo include pre-1900 publications, such as an Encyclopedia Britannica set published in 1771.
At the exhibition opening ceremony, CityU president H.K. Chang presented a Friends of the Library honorary membership card to Mr Woo as thanks for his generous book donation.
Through the Friends of the Library scheme, which aims to share the library's resources with those that have an enthusiasm for books and reading, CityU hopes to raise funds to conserve the library's collection of books and to purchase new titles for the school's academic and research development.
It also aims to help keep people informed about the growth of the library.
The library has a collection of more than 761,000 volumes of books and an expanding electronic database and media resources.
It also hosts a range of activities including the Famous Scholars/Writers lecture series.
Friends of the Library members receive free access to the library and can use its various services and resources. Some members will be granted book borrowing privileges, depending on the level of membership.
E-mail newsletters will be sent to members to inform them about upcoming special programmes and functions organised by the library.
