Economist Lawrence Lau, formerly at Stanford University, this week replaced retiring Professor Ambrose King Yeo-chee as vice-chancellor of Chinese University.

Open University has appointed Dr Charles Lee Yeh-kwong as its council chairman for a two-year period, replacing the retiring Dr Philip Wu Po-him.

stepping out for $84,000

More than 90 students, families and friends of the Richard Ivey School of Business, took a million steps for charity raising more than $84,000 for Sowers Action, which supports education in China. It has raised $174,000, enough to build a school in Yunnan Province.

An English-learning project at HKFEW Wong Cho Bau Primary School in Tung Chung has raised enough to send 30 children in Henan Province orphaned by Aids to school for a year. More than $9,200 was raised for the Chi Heng Foundation from the preparation and sale of cakes, with activities, involving 850 students, conducted in English.

The English Schools Foundation has appointed a principal from Western Australia to head its Glenealy School. Peter Wood takes over from Ed Harvey in January. It has also appointed an Australian as its first Special Educational Needs Adviser. John Barker joins the ESF from South Australia. A Briton, Chris Durbin, has been appointed secondary school improvement officer.
