Tourism officials deny bribe charges

A manager and two officers of the Hong Kong Tourism Board pleaded not guilty yesterday to 11 charges of bribery and one of fraud, related to allegations of false expenses claims. Manager Elsie Wan Yuen-yee, 55, and officers Luk Chi-man, 24, and Choi Sau-yee, 27, are accused of using false documents to claim entertainment and travel expenses between July 2002 and August last year. Acting Principal Magistrate David Thomas, in Eastern Court, adjourned the case until August 13 for a pre-trial review.

Four-months in jail over false marriage papers

A 50-year-old man was jailed for four months for trying to use false documents to marry a second woman. Three false certificates of Absence of Marriage Record were found at Wong Chi-keung's home. He pleaded guilty at Kowloon City Court to two counts of possessing false instruments. Wong, who is already married in Hong Kong and has a son living in Canada, tried to marry a mainland woman after she became pregnant and had his baby.

Search for owner of flare that lit up godown

Police are trying to find the owner of a signal flare that went off accidentally in a Yau Tong godown yesterday. The sea-rescue device, which is about 50cm long, went off inside the Tung Yuen Street warehouse when removal workers accidentally hit it. Police and fire officers were called in. No one was injured but a woman worker, 46, complained of illness from smoke inhalation.

Three injured in alleged drink-driving accident

A man was arrested for alleged drink-driving after a Mercedes-Benz crashed in Wan Chai injuring the three passengers. The driver, 23, was arrested after the vehicle rammed into the kerb in the eastbound lane of Gloucester Road near the entrance of the Cross-Harbour Tunnel shortly after 4am. He was unhurt but failed a breath test. The driver was released on a $5,000 bail. His three passengers, two men and a woman, were taken to Ruttonjee Hospital and Eastern Hospital for treatment.

Youths attack man

A man was assaulted by a gang of youths and robbed of a bag containing $5,000 and two mobile phones in Mongkok. The victim, 23, was punched and kicked in Shantung Street at about 4am.
