Poisoned diners recover

Hygiene officials continued inspecting the Regal Riverside Hotel in Sha Tin yesterday after sushi and incorrectly stored food were linked to a food poisoning outbreak on Wednesday.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus bacteria were found in a sample taken from patients. Most of the 91 patients suffered abdominal pain and diarrhoea and all have recovered.

The cause of the outbreak has been linked to sushi served in a buffet dinner and food stored in refrigerators that were not cold enough. All restaurants at the hotel have been closed since Friday.

'Staff from the Food and Environmental Health Department conducted two checks at the hotel [yesterday],' a spokeswoman said.

The victims, aged between two and 80, included students and staff from a kindergarten and a secondary school in the New Territories.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is one of the most common causes of food poisoning and is destroyed by heating food to 75 degrees Celsius or above for several minutes.
