Going for gold

We all know about the damage the sun can do to our skin, but no one wants to be pasty white on the beach. The answer is to fake it. Self-tanning products are easy to apply and give results in a matter of hours. Go easy at first, applying just a thin layer at a time until you find a depth of colour that suits you. And make sure to wash your hands afterwards or you'll have orange palms.

Face Of Australia Sun Bronzer Instant Tan with Aloe Vera ($79 for 150ml)

Not very effective. You have to splash a huge amount to get just a little tan, and the colour isn't very natural.

Sea & Ski Dark Tanning Carrot Oil ($70.9 for 240ml)

This is a dark tanning spray, not a self-tanner. It might work well if you stay under the sun with the spray on, but it stains clothes. Also it's very oily and hard to spray.

Clinique Self-Sun Body Quick Bronze ($160 for 125ml)

Ok for a quick fix. Gives a bronzy tint to the skin that lasts about four days.

Clinique Self-Sun Face Quick Bronze ($160 for 50ml)

The bronze tint looks good on the face, but apply with caution: avoid the hairline and eyebrows.

Dermalogica Protective Self Tan SPF 15 ($338 for 116ml)

While most of the self-tan products don't give any sun protection, an SPF 15 makes this one a good buy. It gives an obvious and natural tan that lasts for more than four days.
