Defending champs win first matches of Nike league

Defending champions Lady Tuned Air got their 2004 Nike All-Hong Kong Youth Basketball League campaign off to a winning start with a 34-33 defeat of Lady Air Zoom on Tuesday at the Southorn Stadium in Wan Chai.

The first matches of the much-anticipated three-week competition also produced a win for boys' under-16 defending champions Junior Uptempo. They beat Junior Turbulence 73-62.

In the under-19 division, Team Air Max opened with a 68-54 win over Team Air Zoom, and Team Force beat Team Foamposite 74-69.

A total of 270 players are taking part in the summer Nike league, which has been held annually since 1997. It consists of eight boys' teams in the 19-and-under division, six boys' teams in the 16-and-under and four girls' teams. The top four teams from each division will advance to the playoffs, which begin on August 17.

The finals are scheduled for August 22.

Today's schedule: 4pm Team Foamposite v Team Air Max; 5.30pm Lady Flight v Lady Air Zoom; 7pm Junior Uptempo v Junior Flight; 8.30pm Team Air Zoom v Team Force.
