Eighteen people - including a traffic policeman - were killed yesterday after a truck ploughed into a group of bus passengers standing on the side of a Guangdong highway who had escaped a crash 80 minutes earlier.

Twenty-one other people were injured in the accident, many of them seriously, on a superhighway near Shaoguan at 12.20am and taken to a hospital in Pingshi. Sixteen of the victims were killed instantly, while two later died in the hospital, a Shaoguan city government spokesman said.

The tragedy followed a crash between a bus and a truck about 11pm on Wednesday in which none of the passengers were hurt. A traffic policeman who arrived at the scene moved all the passengers to an open area on the roadside.

Shortly after midnight, two trucks collided near the same spot, with one of the vehicles ramming into the passengers.

A doctor at the Pingshi hospital said three people were still in critical condition last night. All of the victims were from Hunan and Hubei .

Police are still investigating the cause of the second accident.
