One jab and they're ready to tango
A new men's health clinic in Tsim Sha Tsui has engineered a geriatric revolution by reviving the sex lives of men - including one aged 85 who hadn't made love for 15 years.
Men's Health Solutions, which opened in March, is a private clinic offering drug-injections to cure impotence and premature ejaculation. The clinic says the treatment has never been offered in Hong Kong before.
Patients take home an applicator that injects the drugs at the push of a button. It's used five to 10 minutes before the patient wants to have sex.
According to clinic director Frank Yeung Sut-ip, patients who have the $150-a-time injections (of Papaverine, Phentolamine and Prostaglandin E1) are sexually capable until an hour later, when the effects of the injection wear off. The treatment has been used for up to 20 years overseas. 'We've had patients ranging in age from 25 to 85,' says Yeung. 'The 85-year-old now has a normal sex life.
'We have another patient aged 74. He's had a sexual problem for about six years since his wife had a stroke and he stopped having sex. He came to us because he had a girlfriend and he couldn't perform even though he was taking 100mg of Viagra at a time. With Viagra you need sexual stimulation. With our treatment, you don't.'
Yeung says his clinic has had 200 patients since opening, and most have been happy with the treatment. 'The majority of our patients are aged from their late 50s to 70s. Our patients are just so happy when they walk away from the centre,' he says.
'They've been frustrated. They've been taking oral medication and still it hasn't been effective. On their first visit here they have a test dose and they find it works.
'Seventy per cent get the treatment plan right away. Thirty per cent are still struggling and thinking: 'Can I do the injection myself?' Eventually, in most cases they return in the next 10 days to take up a treatment plan.'
