A costly fling

People arrested on the mainland for visiting prostitutes face a maximum penalty of a 5,000 yuan fine or six months' re-education through labour.

Liu Heng, dean of Sun Yat-sen University's department of law, said all offenders were treated the same way.

Under mainland laws the Public Security Bureau can order criminals to undergo re-education through labour without a trial. Anyone so ordered has 60 days to lodge an appeal before a court.

The Guangdong Public Security Bureau yesterday declined to reveal figures concerning prostitution in the province and would not say how many Hong Kong residents had been arrested for visiting prostitutes there.
