Recently, Families asked for your views on a controversial book, The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands, by Laura Schlessinger, in which she advises women not to criticise their husbands, to look pretty, keep a tidy house and do their utmost to keep their men happy.
Reader Mary Thompson, from the Peak, was among those who weren't impressed:
'I think Schlessinger is taking women back to the Dark Ages. Marriage is a joining together of two people who love each other, and that journey should be equal. Many women these days have their own careers, as well as managing a household and looking after children. Why should a husband not cook dinner occasionally, do the grocery shopping or take the children to school?
'Marriage should be about sharing, giving and taking, living and loving your best friend, romance and fun. It can be hard work as we grow older, mature and change, and I know it doesn't always work. I think we're lucky to have the freedom to enjoy a happy marriage and not have the restrictions of some other cultures. No woman should be subservient to a man or vice versa. A healthy marriage is one in which two people take part.'
