Innovative ideas to build staff morale

SALARIES, COMMISSIONS and bonuses may be great motivators, but successful companies realise other factors can contribute just as much to building staff morale and creating a genuine sense of belonging. Centaline has, therefore, taken steps to implement the following.

An annual fund-raising programme with proceeds going to a charity nominated by the staff committee. Last year, more than $200,000 was collected to build a school on the mainland and to support physically handicapped students planning to enter university.

It has signed up with the 'Caring Company' programme run by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service. This project encourages volunteers to help those in need, share their business expertise and donate cash or gifts to the community.

Each year the firm nominates four outstanding workers for the distinguished salesperson award run by the Hong Kong Management Association. This gives them deserved recognition, broadens their experience and helps develop professional presentation skills.

A lucky draw was organised during the Euro 2004 football championships to tie in with a company campaign to promote better teamwork among departments. It drew on the analogy of the best sports team, like the best company, which makes the most of the strengths of each individual.

Special attention is given to 'cross training'. As younger staff prefer interactive training, they make site visits and trips to mainland offices. External training courses are identified for individuals likely to be promoted. Depending on the amount, Centaline will pay all or an agreed proportion of the course fees.
