Jilted lover jumps to his death

A man whose girlfriend had recently broken off their relationship plunged to his death from the roof of an 18-storey building early yesterday as the woman looked on.

He landed not far from the woman's new boyfriend, who was waiting for her on the ground floor of the residential block in King's Road, North Point.

The 29-year-old victim had been waiting for his ex-girlfriend to return home since before midnight.

When the woman, also 29, arrived with her new boyfriend, 23, at 12.40am, the man asked to talk with her about their relationship.

A police spokeswoman said the pair went up to the roof of the building while the new boyfriend waited downstairs.

'Officers were told that during the 10-minute conversation, the [old boyfriend] asked her to come back to him,' the spokeswoman said. 'He leapt from the roof of the building after she refused his request for a reunion.'

The new boyfriend waiting below heard a loud bang, discovered the man lying unconscious on King's Road and called police.

He was taken to Eastern Hospital, where he was declared dead.

The spokeswoman said there were no suspicious circumstances. Police did not know exactly when the woman broke off the relationship.
