A Hostile Place

A Hostile Place

by John Fullerton

Pan $101

In short, hard sentences, this war thriller comes at the reader like a telegraph message: 'She didn't move. Neither did I. Not a muscle. I heard voices. Close. We dared not raise our head.' Not an easy read, but it has the right elements to keep fans of the genre entertained. Thomas Morgan is a bounty hunter in Afghanistan. He's a man of 'violence and larceny', but he has a morality of his own - at least his actions are less harmful than corporate theft or state-sanctioned mass murder, he reasons. Hired by the US military for a top-secret operation, Morgan can't trust anyone but himself. Nothing is what it seems. As John Fullerton settles into his story, he indulges himself by using the odd conjunction to link two phrases, and even treats the reader to the occasional metaphor.
