Memorial trust aids East Timor

The Blair Forster Memorial Trust, set up in memory of the Li Po Chun United World College principal who died of cancer last September, has raised more than $250,000 to help students in East Timor.

The trust is already supporting four senior secondary students and one student at teacher training college in the country for which Forster had so much concern.

Next month a student selected by the trust will arrive from East Timor to take up a scholarship place provided by college. Uplands School in Penang, which like Li Po Chun teaches the International Baccalaureate, will take another student. It has also arranged scholarship places for East Timorese students at several other international schools.

It is looking to raise further funds with a sponsored walk on September 12, from the college in Ma On Shan to Sai Kung, along one of Forster's favourite routes. Alumni and others are invited to join.

'The people of East Timor seem to have missed a generation of people who had an opportunity for tertiary education,' said John Green, the college's director of studies.
