The Full Cupboard of Life

by Alexander McCall Smith

Abacus $101

This is another instalment in the life of Mma Precious Ramotswe, the traditionally built owner of Botswana's No1 Ladies' Detective Agency. Mma Ramotswe is hired by a wealthy hair salon owner - also a traditionally built woman - who wants her to investigate four suitors who, she suspects, may only be after her money. Mma Potokwani, the matron of the Orphan Farm, has bullied Ramotswe's fiance, J.L.B. Matekoni, into a parachute jump for charity. He can't find a way out of it. All the charming elements that have made this series such a success are here, and simply spending time in the happy world of Mma Ramotswe is reason enough to read this book. But the spark of earlier efforts is missing. This is the fifth in the series, and the jokes are wearing a little thin.
