gunman opens fire in betting office robbery bid

A gunman opened fire in a Jockey Club betting office in To Kwa Wan in an attempted robbery late last night The man, who wore a facemask and was dressed in blue T-shirt and jeans, entered the betting office in Pak Tai Street shortly after 11.30pm.

He went into one of the counters and threatened a staff member with a gun, asking the assistant to give him money. The staff member did not give him any cash and hid under a table.

The gunman shot at a window shield, leaving a hole on it. He then dashed out of the betting office and fled towards Ma Tau Wai Road.

There were dozens of people inside the office at the time but no one was injured and no money stolen.

Birds' nests stolen in $250,000 haul

A shop in Mongkok selling birds' nests was robbed of goods worth about $250,000 yesterday. The owner of the shop, located in Soy Street, discovered the break-in at 10am. All the birds' nests were gone. The culprits gained entry to the store by breaking through a wall in an adjacent unit. A crowbar was found in the shop.

Driver rescued after car crashes into toll booth

Firemen rescued the driver from the wreckage of a goods van that rammed into an empty toll booth near the Tsing Ma Bridge. The vehicle was travelling towards Tung Chung, along the Lantau Link, when the accident happened. The 30-year-old driver was taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital for treatment.

health official held over peeping tom case

A high-ranking official from the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau has been arrested for loitering, in a suspected peeping Tom case. The official, a 30-year-old man, was arrested after being caught allegedly using his mobile phone to take pictures of the legs of a woman sitting opposite him at a restaurant in Wan Chai. He was released on $500 bail.
