Xing Huina announced to the world that China's women's distance running had returned after years in the doldrums. Xing thought she could win a medal in her favoured 5,000m but finished a disappointing ninth. Everyone then forgot about her. 'I had nothing to lose and I felt very relaxed before the race. 'My speciality is the 5,000 metres and I was expecting to win a medal, but my ear was hurting and I felt dizzy. But I felt absolutely fine in this race. Winning this gold makes up for the disappointment of not doing well in my favoured event. When I crossed the finish line I said, Can this be true? I want to say Chinese people are the best. It's every athlete's dream of winning a gold medal on home soil. I hope to do even better in four years' time.'
