The thieves are victims themselves, from a rising number of children from poor eastern European countries smuggled into the wealthy West and forced to steal ... Some are sent to the West by parents who hope they will do better ... The easing of visa requirements for some eastern European countries has made it easier to smuggle them into countries like Austria.


When 'north', 'south', 'east' and 'west' are used to refer to directions, we use the lower case. Example: I just bought a house in the west of London/in western London.


However, we use a capital W when we use 'the West' to refer to the western part of the world, especially western Europe and North (here, N is used instead of n because North America, like South Africa, is a proper noun) America.


1. Many people in the (West/west) have developed an interest in the culture of the (East/east). 2. I find the (western/Western) part of the country most beautiful.
