'More proof' of independence push

The Taiwan Affairs Office yesterday lashed out against Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian, accusing him of taking every opportunity to pursue an independence agenda.

Zhang Mingqing , spokesman for the office, said Beijing was wary of Mr Chen's intentions in his recent move to shorten the name of the Republic of China to 'Taiwan'.

In addition, Mr Chen's recent remarks on seeking a redefinition of Taiwan's position in the coming four years showed his pledge on the constitutional issue in his inaugural address on May 20 was merely to deceive the public, he said.

On the eve of the first day of his second term in office, Mr Chen was told by Beijing to accept the one-China principle and abandon his alleged pursuit of independence for Taiwan.

But Mr Zhang said that so far, there had been no indication that Mr Chen would do so.

In Taipei, Chiu Tai-san, vice-chairman and spokesman for the Mainland Affairs Council, said Mr Zhang's remarks were not constructive.
