Confident Wong eyeing breakthrough title win

In-form Wong Wai-hang has been given a big chance of finally clinching his first professional tournament win at next month's KCC-Perrier Centenary Cup 2004.

Helping to celebrate Kowloon Cricket Club's 100th anniversary, Wong will throw down his challenge in the 16-man field as the second seed. The 27-year-old Hong Kong number one is itching to return to competition after a good run at this month's Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Open.

The Centenary Cup will also see the women contesting the tournament too, with Hong Kong's hopes resting on Asian Games gold medallist, Rebecca Chiu Wing-yin.

Wong surprised observers earlier this month by taking a game off current world number one, Peter Nicol of England, in the first round of our premier squash tournament.

And the talented full-time player is raring to go in the latest Hong Kong tournament, scheduled from October 5-10 at KCC. The main competition begins on October 7 after two days of qualifying.

'My form has held well since the Hong Kong Open and I can't wait to return to competition,' said Wong, who is ranked 128th in the world. 'I have retained my fitness and I have continued to train hard.'

Wong came close to grabbing his maiden pro victory at last September's Buler Challenge Cup, where he reached the final only to be stopped in straights sets by New Zealand's Callum O'Brien.

But with experience garnered against the world's top players recently, Wong will pose a huge threat to top seed Paul Davis of Australia. Hong Kong's Rebecca Chiu is top seed in the women's competition ahead of Wales' Tegwen Malik and New Zealand's Tamsyn Leevey.
