SAR fencers have edge over rest of the world, says coach
Hong Kong's all-conquering wheelchair fencing team will dominate the sport for years to come, according to their mainland coach Zheng Zhaokang.
Alison Yu Chui-yee clinched her fourth gold medal at the Athens Paralympic Games when she led the women to victory in the foil team event on Tuesday. Alison, Fan Pui-shan, Chan Yui-chong and Wong Kit-mui beat Hungary 45-22 in the final.
The SAR fencers have dominated their sport in Greece, winning 12 medals, including seven golds.
Their spectacular performance means Hong Kong proudly sit eighth in the overall medal rankings, ahead of Canada, the United States and Japan.
Winning four gold medals is a remarkable achievement, but Alison won't let it go to her head.
'I am so happy about this,' said Alison, a Form Seven student at Our Lady of the Rosary College. 'But it's not the time to celebrate right now. We want to support our men's sabre fencers in the next two days before having a big party.
'They (Hungary) gave us a tough time, even if the result looks different. They put us under severe pressure. If a team reach the final, they must be good and the Hungarians are very good. Maybe the fact that they lost against us in the individual events did not give them enough confidence [for the team event].
