BUDA wants underground technicians

Several opportunities have popped up for engineers - both those at the bottom rung of the ladder or individuals who have at least five years of experience.

In addition to inviting applications for the positions of engineer/senior engineer and technical officer (repair/maintenance), an award-winning engineering and consultancy group is looking for 10 technical officer trainees.

Founded in 1998 and based in Hong Kong, the BUDA Group is a professional underground utility survey and data management services provider.

Continuing growth lies behind BUDA's recruitment drive.

'We do this as one of the strategies to cope with our expansion. For example, our three-year training programme for the post of technical officer trainee was actually started in 2000,' UtilityINFO (HK) chief executive King Wong said.

UtilityINFO is a member of BUDA.

The group's new engineer/senior engineer must report to the assistant project manager.

Duties include inspection surveys and the 'protection of all underground utility design work', and identifying methods of undertaking projects and following up on their progress.

The technical officer (repair/maintenance) will report to the project engineer or surveyor.

'Inspection and the repair and maintenance of all equipment, as delegated by the project engineer' will be par for the course, while the daily operation and management of the equipment rooms should be expected.

Both positions offered quite flexible work procedures with minimum instruction, Mr Wong said.

The trainee technical officers will be responsible for 'inspection surveys and the protection of all underground utility design work'.

Mr Wong said whatever the candidates' target positions, 'everyone has to be well-equipped with technical know-how and relevant skills'.

'Training [theoretical and practical] will therefore be very important in safety and quality. We believe: 'Safe work, safe lives; quality works, quality life',' he said.

With this in mind, management and leadership training will be offered for the engineer/senior engineer and technical officer posts, while all staff get safety training at BUDA.

Applicants need a degree in engineering or surveying for the engineering role, a diploma in mechanical or electronic engineering or its equivalent for the technical officer role, or Form Five level or above for trainees.

'Technical know-how as well as a sense of responsibility', leadership skill and good communication skills are definite pluses, Mr Wong said.

Candidates should also be self-disciplined, team players and offer a positive working attitude.
