I wanna be a playwright

lau kit wai

What qualifications do you need?

You can study how to write plays at The Hong Kong Academy For Performing Arts, but the most important thing is that your work is well-received and popular. We are in the field of performing arts, and a degree is helpful only if you want to apply for a teaching job or a government post.

What sort of person does the job suit?

I think people with different personalities can develop different writing styles. Personally, I am quite nosy and I want to know about everything. But basically you have to be in love with theatre.

What's the best way to enter the industry?

You can write plays and find people to perform your work. A way to do this is to take part in amateur theatre groups. You can also organise a theatre group of your own. There are now activities in Hong Kong such as the Fringe Festival that offer opportunities for newcomers to write proposals and stage their own productions.

What work hours do you keep?

Our work hours are quite unstable. We just know we need to write a certain play and then deliver it before the deadline.

Is there a clear career path?

The development of Hong Kong drama is still in an initial stage. Many theatre professionals do not have a very clear outlook because there are no predecessors to follow. We are basically the first generation of full-time drama professionals and need to pave our own way.

What is the best part of your job?

Being a playwright is a very lonely job, and sometimes it is quite painful because nobody can help you. However, it is a great feeling at the end when I can solve all the problems on my own.

What is the worst?

Sometimes the theatre critics are the biggest enemies to a playwright. It still hurts me to see some so-called critics in Hong Kong, who only have skin-deep knowledge about theatre, denying the effort of a group of professional theatre workers.

Salary?

It fluctuates quite a bit. On average, a playwright can earn about $10,000 to $20,000 for a play.

Last word?

Write. If you don't take the first step, you can never begin.
