OS update a must to secure hardware

If you have not already downloaded Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack II (SP2), the update is a must-install release for safer surfing and greater protection against malicious scripts and dodgy downloads.

The security-focused service pack contains bug fixes and major updates that help keep the operating system safe from being attacked or hijacked.

SP2 is almost an upgrade. There are new features and significant changes in four areas: network protection, memory protection, e-mail security and browsing security.

Many of the new security features are deployed automatically but can easily be turned off. For example, Internet Explorer has a built-in pop-up control which allows users to block or allow ActiveX controls. Information about the digital signatures of these controls and buttons that enable, disable or update the controls are included.

The Messenger service is disabled by default but can quickly be turned back on. Also, Outlook Express can be set to refuse HTML-formatted messages, thereby preventing e-mails from displaying images and executing code.

A Security Centre checks the status of automatic updates and administers the firewall and internet security settings. It detects if anti-virus software is installed, anti-virus software definitions are up-to-date and a firewall is enabled.

The Windows Firewall is almost 'no set-up needed'. It is turned on by default and closes all unused ports to block intruders. But it only blocks inbound threats and does not touch or see the outbound ones.

The Wireless Networking Wizard looks nice. Its Connection dialogues provide information about available access points.

Additional tools for wireless security and native support for Bluetooth are also good.

To install SP2, a 233MHz or above PC running Windows XP with at least 64MB of Ram, 900MB of hard disk space and a standard CD-Rom drive is required. Installation over the internet through broadband is recommended. Dial-up users should wait for the free installation CD.
