HK student wins gold medal at Maths Olympiad

Secondary school student Tsoi Yun-pui has won Hong Kong's first gold medal at the China Western Mathematical Olympiad 2004.
The prestigious maths competition was held in Yinchuan in the Chinese region of Ningxia from September 25 and 30.

The Hong Kong team produced its best ever performance at the Olympiad - winning one gold, five silvers and two bronze medals. Last year, the Hong Kong only won three silver and three bronze medals.

The Hong Kong team's final results were:

Gold: Tsoi Yun-pui Shatin Government Secondary School

Silver: Fong Pok-wai SKH Lam Woo Memorial Seconday School
Chung On-yip, Queen Elizabeth School
Ng Kwong-hei, La Salle College
Wong Chiu-wai, St Joseph's College
Tsang Man-ho, Munsang College

Bronze: Yim Wing-yin, South Tuen Mun Government Secondary School
Lee Kar-kwok, Diocesan Boys' School

An Education and Manpower Bureau spokesman said 84 secondary school students from 21 teams participated in the Olympiad.
