Overworked drivers a threat to road safety

The long shifts worked by many professional drivers could affect road safety, the Federation of Hong Kong Transport Worker Organisations warned yesterday.

More than half the drivers work more than 10 hours a day, according to a federation survey. And more than a quarter work for more than 12 hours. Ninety per cent get less than eight hours' sleep a day, and the federation said the lack of sleep could affect road safety.

Most want minimum wage, maximum hours set

Most people want the government to set minimum wages and maximum working hours, a survey by a labour group has found. The survey of 300 former students of employee retraining courses, conducted in July, found 75 per cent believed the government should set up a minimum-wage system for different occupations, especially for janitors, security guards and personal care workers. And 69 per cent want eight hours fixed as the maximum working day.

Honorary doctorate for director John Woo

Local-born Hollywood director John Woo will be awarded an honorary doctorate of social sciences by Baptist University next month, along with designer Henry Steiner. Professors Chen Keji and Lotfi A. Zadeh will be awarded honorary doctorates of science and choreographer Lin Hwai-min honorary doctorate of letters.

Girl, 12, knocked down

Police are hunting a hit-and-run driver who knocked down a 12-year-old girl on Hoi Shing Road, Tsuen Wan. The girl was taken to Yan Chai Hospital, where she was in stable condition last night.
