Hi-tech industry aims to reach new heights

The central government has vowed to speed up the growth of hi-tech industries, with total output expected to be worth 10 trillion yuan a year by 2020.

National Development and Reform Commission vice-director Zhang Xiaoqiang said the hi-tech sector was growing by 24 per cent a year.

Vice-Minister for Science and Technology Liu Yanhua said hi-tech products now accounted for about 27 per cent of the country's total exports and their contribution to trade was growing by more than a third each year.

Mr Zhang and Mr Liu were in Shenzhen yesterday to attend the annual China Hi-tech Fair, the largest on the mainland. Vice-Premier Wu Yi and Commerce Minister Bo Xilai officiated at the opening ceremony. The fair ends on Saturday.

Technology officials from Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Austria and Myanmar met Mr Zhang, Mr Liu and Vice-Minister of Information Industry Lou Qinjian to discuss international co-operation in the hi-tech field.

Mr Zhang said the mainland's hi-tech sector was growing strongly, with the increase being led by telecommunications. He said the total output of hi-tech products last year was valued at 2.75 trillion yuan.
