The MTR suffered yet another fault yesterday when the signalling system at Sheung Wan failed, disrupting train services for half an hour.

It was the second such failure in as many days and the latest in a string of incidents that have prompted the MTR Corporation to launch an independent review of its operations.

The latest breakdown happened at 1.25pm and caused the rerouting of every second train between Admiralty station and Sheung Wan.

A spokeswoman for the MTRC said the rerouting meant services in and out of Sheung Wan ran every eight minutes instead of the usual four.

'We turned the other trains around at Admiralty,' she said. 'But it is important to remember that train services were not suspended at any time.

'Our system is fail-safe. If there is a situation where the signal fails, the trains run at dead slow speed so they can stop in time if they see anything ahead.'
