A burglar dressed only in underpants fell to his death yesterday while escaping after being spotted by the owner of the home he had broken into.

The burglar, in his 40s, had broken into a 12th-floor flat at Connie Towers in Hong Ning Road, Kwun Tong, at 4.30am.

Investigators believe he was a professional, taking off his clothes to avoid being caught by anti-theft hooks or spikes often found on the walls of buildings.

Police said they were alerted by a man living in the burgled flat.

'The man was woken by noises and walked out from his room to the living room to check,' a police spokesman said. 'He then saw the burglar in the living room and the burglar climbed out the window to escape.'

The burglar climbed down water pipes but lost his footing at the sixth floor and fell to a third floor podium. Police found a pile of clothing at the staircase of the apartment block, which they suspect belonged to the burglar.
