A powerful aid to learning

Scarlet Ma

Wong Chung-kwong, child psychologist and chairman of the board of advisers of the Whole Person Development Institute

FAMOUS CHILD psychologist Dr Wong says the computer is a powerful tool which children can use to gather knowledge, learn language and develop their creativity, problem solving and interpersonal skills.

Computer software can even teach children essential skills like self-control and communication.

Dr Wong believes interactive learning is the best way for children to learn and computers provide instantaneous and accurate feedback. This encourages them and sets goals they can reach.

However, the same phenomenon works when children are exposed to bad content on the computer. So how can we make computers a blessing for them?

According to Dr Wong, there are two important ways. First, there must be a good parent-child relationship. And second, parents must help their children build a balanced daily routine.

'When children are in kindergarten, parents should take more control of how their children use the computer,' says Dr Wong.

In primary school, parents can give their children more choices and flexibility.

If children have a problem using the computer, parents should discuss this with them and guide them to find the solutions themselves.
