81 hours of karaoke

Muscle strain in the upper arms, dehydration and hallucinations - just some of the lesser-known dangers of karaoke singing. But CitySeen readers who enjoy the occasional singalong with friends shouldn't be too alarmed, as Metro Radio DJ Barry Yip Man-fai (pictured) only reported suffering such symptoms after 81 hours, 23 minutes and 13 seconds at the microphone.

Yip broke the world record last Saturday after four days of singing and 1000 songs. He was joined at times by 63 pop stars, actors and actresses, including Kelly Chen Wai-lam, Miriam Yeung Chin-wah and, for the last song, Andy Hui Chi-on. The charity event raised more than $120,000 for Oxfam. Yip was allowed only 15-second rests between songs and a doctor was on hand to monitor his blood pressure and health.

The event was also taped and witnessed by a lawyer to ensure that it makes it into the Guinness World Records. The record, set two years ago in Britain, is 80 hours.
