Exco man has 45 directorships and 43 public offices

Newly appointed Executive Councillor Bernard Chan holds more paid directorships and public offices than any other Exco member, according to the council's declarations of interest released yesterday

Mr Chan has 45 paid directorships and holds posts on 43 boards, committees and other organisations. He has stakes in seven companies, including two - Trasia Investment and Pathfinder Asia - for which he is also a paid director.

His directorship with Pathfinder was not mentioned in his recent declaration of interests to the Legislative Council, where he represents the insurance sector.

He said this was because Pathfinder, a Thai company, was not very active, but he thought it better to be more stringent with his Exco declaration.

As holder of the largest number of paid directorships, Mr Chan said he would 'pay much more attention' to declaring his interests whenever necessary.

Mr Chan also owns 50 per cent of an unspecified property in the United States.

Besides being chairman of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, his other public-service roles include vice-chairman of Oxfam Hong Kong, director of the Community Chest and honorary adviser to the Hong Kong Society of Certified Insurance Practitioners.

The declaration by another new Exco member, Laura Cha Shih May-lung, showed that she is a non-executive director of HSBC and Johnson Electric Holdings but does not have any salaried directorships.

Mrs Cha owns two flats in Southern District, a house on Lantau Island and an apartment in San Francisco either jointly held with her husband or in her own name. Mrs Cha holds two public offices: she is a council member of the University of Science ad Technology and a vice-chairwoman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission's international advisory council.
