Poll legislation amended

Amendments to legislation covering elections and the make-up of local governments were adopted during a week-long session of the National People's Congress Standing Committee that ended yesterday.

Xinhua said lawmakers also reviewed proposed legislation on property rights, and amendments to the bankruptcy and criminal laws.

Under the adopted amendments, the tenure of representatives to people's congresses at village and township levels was extended from three to five years.

The amendments also allowed for more direct meetings between candidates running for elections and their constituencies, as well as stipulations on the removal of congress members who win elections through vote-buying.

Meanwhile, the Standing Committee yesterday named Li Lianning, He Huahui and Sun Wei as vice-secretaries-general of the committee, replacing Jiang Yunbao, Liu Zhen and Zhou Chengkui , who are retiring.
