Diwaliwood extravaganza

There is still about a week before Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights celebrating the Indian new year, but Hong Kong's Indian elite simply can't keep all the excitement in until next Friday.

About 1,000 people are expected to be at the Intercontinental Hotel tomorrow night for Diwaliwood, a star-studded event that includes dinner, all-night partying and a much-awaited show by some of Bollywood's hottest stars.

The 30-year-old heartthrob Hrithik Roshan will be singing and gyrating to the hits It's Magic and Jazoo from last year's blockbuster Koi . . . Mil Gaya, in which he plays a mentally retarded young man who encounters aliens. Kareena Kapoor (pictured), granddaughter of Bollywood pioneer Raj Kapoor, will perform one of her songs, You are my Soniya. Also lighting up the stage will be Akshay Kumar, Shilpa Shetty and Aftab Shivdasani.

Similar to Chinese New Year, Diwali is one of the biggest festivals in the Hindu calendar. Firecrackers are set off, sweets are shared and new clothes worn during the five-day celebration. Unfortunately, the $1,800-a-head tickets to Diwaliwood were sold out long ago.
