Happenings

Sunny weather greeted competitors at the 35th annual sports days organised by NT Heung Yee Kuk Yuen Long District Secondary School at Yuen Long Stadium on October 11 and 12 (pictured right).

A record number of students took part in the track and field events.

Wearing colourful costumes and dancing and singing to the rhythmic beat of the background music, the cheering teams from the four houses - Heung, Yuen, Chung and Hok - provided enthusiastic support for the athletes.

Some students joined their parents in the 2x100-metre and the three-legged races.

Guest-of-honour Leung Shiu-keung, Principal education officer (New Territories) of the Education and Manpower Bureau, talked about

the Paralympics, where disabled athletes displayed great sportsmanship.

He encouraged students to adopt that attitude in all aspects of life, and stressed that sports played an important part in the school curriculum. Sports helped students to deal with challenges inside and outside the classroom, Mr Leung said.

Yuen House stole the limelight by winning the overall championship and the cheering team competition.

Our school's 29th annual sports meet took place on October 8 and 12 at Kowloon Bay Sports Ground. Throughout the two days, the cheering teams' support helped raise the spirits of the athletes as well as the spectators.

Tsae Ko House claimed the overall championship, followed by Legge House and Chia Kam Kong House.

This year, there were two new events - girls' 3,000m and boys' 5,000m. Yip Kwok-shing, the guest-of-honour, joined the 5,000m competition, while Cheong Sin-man, a Form Two student, broke the school record in the girls' 800m.

Another highlight was the outstanding performance by Cyrus Ma Chi-wai, a Form Seven student and a former member of the Hong Kong athletics team.

He won the boys' 100m and 200m. He holds the school records in both events.

Teachers also showed their sporting talents. The climax of the competition was the teachers' relay. Teachers from Staff Room A won the race.

Everybody had a good time and displayed true sportsmanship.

Six students from Sha Tin College visited our school last month. During the week-long programme, they discussed a variety of topics with our students in English.

The visitors were very popular with our schoolmates who eagerly chatted with them.

Finally, my class had a chance to meet them. The students from the international school divided us into groups of seven.

They said that there would be an election and asked each group to choose a well-known personality such as former chief secretary Anson Chan Fong On-sang, tycoon Li Ka-shing, or Secretary for Education and Manpower Arthur Li Kwok-cheung.

Each group would give a speech, outlining the reasons why people should vote for the person to be the next chief executive.

My group chose Arthur Li and we worked together to come up with ideas for the speech (pictured left). The activity helped broaden my horizons.

The visitors said they liked our school. They said our students were active and keen to enhance their knowledge.

They were different from our students in their attitude and learning methods. But we got on very well.

I am looking forward to meeting them again next year.

It was a pleasure having them in our school.

Green House won the best cheering team award.

The parent-teacher-student relay started with a fashion parade, with each team displaying their design skills and spicing up the annual sporting event.

'Non-named' - a group of Secondary Three girls - won the race, while 'Pride' of 5D grabbed the best costume award.

The inter-class and inter-house relays were equally popular and drew hearty cheers from the crowd.
