Beauty getting behind a good cause
Kim Robinson is a man with a mission. After his mother suffered a drawn-out battle with breast cancer, the hairstylist to the stars has decided to give something back to the people responsible for his success - women.
Robinson's aim is to start a cancer centre in Hong Kong similar to the one in Australia which helped his mother.
'Our whole family just fell apart with the news of my mum's cancer,' says Robinson. 'When the Titanic is sinking, you just grab at anything that'll keep you afloat. We found this centre that introduced a 'buddy system' to my mum, and she was better able to cope, having a confidant that's already been through it.'
Robinson was also very close to Canto-pop superstar Anita Mui Yim-fong, who died of cancer last year. 'I just can't bear to think how lonely she must've been,' says the stylist. 'I don't think anyone should face cancer alone.'
Today at a private event at Lane Crawford IFC, Robinson launches his book, 30 Years of Orient Beauty, a photo collection of his work. Many big names have come together to see the success of this project.
With a foreword written by Joyce Ma, it is, according to Robinson, the first Asian hair book of this calibre. Priced at $980, the book features famous faces such as Anita Mui Yim-fong, Terri Holladay and Rosamund Kwan Chi-lam, and comes with a CD of relaxing music.
All of the book's proceeds will go to the Hong Kong Cancer Fund.
