Pastry expert gets a taste for drama
When the 'God of Pastry' cannot even use an icing bag properly, it's time to call in the experts. That's what TVB did in preparation for its new drama series The Gateau Affairs, due to air on Valentine's Day next year. TVB hired JW Marriott's executive pastry chef, Thomas Lui, as a consultant to oversee the filming and instruct stars Joe Ma Tak-chung (who is, seriously, known as the God of Pastry in the series) and Myolie Wu Hang-yee (Ma's love interest in the series, a trainee chef) in the art of dessert-making. Lui had to conjure up a cornucopia of confectionaries for the cameras. When CitySeen caught up with him over tea and - what else - pastries, he talked about the stress of filmmaking. 'You have to get the showpieces exactly right. It's a lot of pressure because there are extras just standing around waiting for you to be ready.
'There's never enough time to make spares, so I always bring a repair kit for any emergencies.'
Lui made 90 cakes for the show. Their fate? 'Oh, it's all been eaten by the crew.'
