The fifth annual sports day of Yan Chai Hospital Wong Wha San Secondary School was held on October 14 and 15 at the Sai Kung Tang Shiu Kin Sports Ground (pictured right).

Lam Kwoon-sun, chief curriculum development Officer (Physical Education) of the Education and Manpower Bureau, was the officiating guest.

Around 350 students and 50 teachers and parents participated in the fun-filled day. The highlight was a 3,000- metre Run for Fun student-teacher race.

Students from a number of nearby primary schools were invited to take part in the boys' and girls' 4x100m relay races, while teachers also competed in another 4x100m race against their former students who had since graduated to the secondary school.

The day ended with a friendly relay in which parents competed against the school management board.

The exciting day saw 39 students break records in 26 events.

Tai Po Government Secondary School hosted its 20th annual athletics meet on October 12 and 19 under sunny autumn skies. Cheng Chun-ping, chairman of Tai Po District Council, was the guest-of- honour.

Records were set in several events, including the girls' 100- and 1,500-metre sprints and the girls' high jump. Form Seven student Chung Ka-shing broke his own school record in the boys' 3,000-metre run, clocking in at 11:35.85.

House cheerleading squads and events such as the student and parent/teacher three-legged race added to the festive atmosphere throughout both days (pictured below).

My school celebrated its 40th anniversary recently with a varied programme.

Various organisations set up booths and there were also exhibitions on different subjects.

I helped prepare the choir's booth and was one of the helpers for the mathematics display.

From October 21 to 23 the school had a lot of visitors and the presents we had gathered for the booth games, such as bears and McDonald's toys, were given away. I thought the night shows on two of the open days were fantastic.

I enjoyed the drama the most.

I am very happy to be a student of my school and was glad that I could join the celebrations of its 40th anniversary.

October 23 marked the 20th anniversary of Shatin Tsung Tsin Secondary School (STTSS).

The ceremony started with a thanksgiving service in which supervisor C.W. Yau talked about the school's history.

Principal Ms Yip gave a progress report highlighting the school's achievements in its progression towards the Outstanding School Awards in 2001, its current direction and its future development. Reverend Cheung, who was one of the supervisors of the then newly established STTSS, was the guest-of-honour at the graduation ceremony.

Reverend Cheung gave a thought-provoking and inspiring speech which can be summarised by 10 English words of progressively greater length.

The 10 words, which carry messages inspiring to teachers and students alike, are as follows: (1) 'I', the most selfish one-letter word; (2) 'we', the most satisfying two-letter word; (3) 'ego', the most poisonous three-letter word; (4) 'love', the most used four-letter word; (5) 'smile', the most pleasing five-letter word; (6) 'rumour', the fastest-spreading six-letter word; (7) 'success', the hardest-working seven-letter word; (8) 'jealousy', the most enviable eight-letter word; (9) 'knowledge', the most powerful nine-letter word; and (10) 'confidence', the most essential ten-letter word.

It is hoped that these words will remain in students' memory so that they will be guided along the right path and won't turn away from them when they grow old.
