The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Research centre opens

The Public Policy Research Institute at Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) opened last week.

The institute was established to promote excellence in public policy through evidence-based research and meet the increasing demand for public policy research and sustainable development in Hong Kong.

'The institute also aims to provide a platform for debates on public policy issues and foster the participation of experts and the community at large when the government formulates its public policy,' PolyU president Poon Chung-kwong said.

The university's aim was to promote research of an applied nature relevant to industrial, commercial and community needs, Professor Poon added.

Record number of graduates

A record-breaking 7,556 students received academic awards during City University of Hong Kong's 19th congregation, which wraps up today.

The university has come a long way since its humble beginnings in a rented building in Mongkok with a mere 1,200 students and 460 staff.

It now has 22,500 students and a staff of nearly 2,900.
