Top wealth managers are in demand

A high-level opportunity has just come up for wealth managers with good qualifications and a distinct aptitude in marketing.

Hong Leong Bank, a successful Malaysian bank, is looking for up to three relationship managers and senior relationship managers to join its new Hong Kong-based branch.

Being a listed subsidiary of the renowned Hong Leong Group Malaysia and a fellow subsidiary of the Guoco Group Hong Kong, Hong Leong Bank provides niche wealth management services to Asian clients.

Our mission is to 'serve the needs of wealthy clients in the Greater China area,' according to Becky Wong, head of wealth management at Hong Leong Bank's local branch.

With this in mind, the bank aims to adopt 'a very competitive, open product architecture' to offer good product services and 'best of breed' investment ideas provided by the market's best managers.

The bank not only sources product ideas from its treasury department, but also from outside sources with a selection of third party investment products.

'We also provide strategic alliances to advise on tax planning by referring to professional advisers,' Ms Wong said.

Candidates should be prepared to join a team of six to 10 marketing people in a department that is 'brand new'. 'Successful applicants will be wealth managers, providing investment advisory services to clients,' she said.

These positions should not be viewed as purely sales-focused. 'It's not a sales pitch. We advise clients through an asset allocation model that would match individual client's risk profile. Our goal is to increase clients' wealth. A strong client focus and excellent experience and knowledge of the financial products in addition to marketing skills is absolutely essential if you want to win a place on our team,' Ms Wong added.

Candidates must also adhere to the Hong Leong Group's core motto - Reaching Out Even Closer to You.

'Energetic, entrepreneurial, client focused and innovative are some qualities that we are looking for from our staff. We treasure our human capital since we need quality relationship managers to take care of the wealth of our clients.'

What are the job prospects? Although the bank is 'starting small', it is in the process of building up a solid foundation, keen to develop the rapidly growing Chinese wealth market and confident of providing its staff with valuable experience in this field.

Successful recruits are highly likely to gain management and team leader experience.

New recruits can expect on-the-job training and the opportunity to benefit from the role's steep learning curve.

'What we do here is really new,' Ms Wong added.
