BUDDING triathlete Ben Hartwright caught attention in the Repulse Bay aquathon when he was beaten by the narrowest of margins by Anatol Schweizer in the men's under-20 category.

Hartwright was the third overall to complete the 850 metres sea swim behind ''open'' competitors Con O'Kelly and Andrew Patrick.

He kept the lead among the under-20s throughout the five-kilometre run until the last few strides when an older Schweizer came storming home to win the event in 30 minutes and 23 seconds.

Hartwright was only a second behind, with fellow junior Hong Kong squad teammate Ace Trask a distant third more than two minutes further back.

It was a similarly close race in the under-14 division, which was held over a shorter course comprising a 400 metres swim and 2.5 kilometres run, with Albert Hau narrowly pipping Mark Bailey for the title.

Race favourite Bailey was the first swimmer out of the water and was still in front until the final bend which took the competitors on to the beach.
