Mother leaves children at home alone for weekend

A single mother left her two children unattended at their Tin Shui Wai home for three days over the weekend.

A girl, 12, and her brother, eight, told police their mother had bought them food and left them the keys to the unit in Yuet Kwai House in Tin Yuet Estate before she left for the mainland on Friday.

The girl said it was not the first time they had been left unattended when their mother left Hong Kong.

Police are investigating the mother for possible criminal negligence and refused to reveal why she went to the mainland.

Last night the boy was in Tuen Mun Hospital, where he was sent for a check-up. Police said they would arrange for psychologists to see him.

The mother returned from the mainland yesterday afternoon and was helping police with their inquiries. Police said no one had been arrested.

The case was discovered early yesterday after the children lost the key when they went out to play separately on Sunday afternoon. They were unable to return home that night. The boy stayed in a park near the estate and his sister stayed at a friend's place.

The boy sought help from a security guard at the estate's management office, who called police.
