Tips for filling gaps

Steps and Skills

Study the title which may provide a hint about the theme of the passage

Browse through the passage to get the overall idea behind it

Read the lines carefully to determine what is missing in terms of the intended meaning

Choose the right word to fill in the gap so that the intended meaning is preserved

Note the context and adjust your answers by using the right part of speech, verb form, agreement in numbers, etc.

Exam Skill Reminders:

Note the following cues:

1. What is missing in terms of meaning? Fill in a word that can bring in the missing meaning.

2. Note the context to determine the form of the word.

Verb: basic form(s), past, present or past participle

Noun: singular or plural

Adjective or adverb

3. Watch out for gaps which do not add meaning but tone.

4. Watch out for grammatical fillers Such as articles, prepositions, etc.

Meaning Gap
