Pedal carts lap up the miles to help charities
Pedal carts of all shapes and size sped around Victoria Park yesterday in an attempt to raise $1 million for charity.
They were taking part in the annual 24-hour Hong Kong Pedal Kart Grand Prix.
The event, organised by Round Table 10 and the Hong Kong Human-Powered Vehicle Association, has raised more than $25 million since its inception in 1986.
Jo Clark, 32, of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, said the feeling of overtaking opponents was wonderful. Her teammates also helped her get through the event.
'After finishing a few laps, you feel tired. When you hear them yelling encouragement, the feeling is really good,' she said.
Lo Hung-fai, 35, of the CLP Power team, who was competing in the event for a third time, said they hoped to raise money for underprivileged children.
Shaun Cocks, a Year 12 student at West Island School, had been honing his cart riding skills twice a week since September to prepare for the event. He had also been running up and down stairs to improve his fitness.
The best team performance was achieved by the yacht club in 1995 when its team notched up 724km.
