Customs seize 2.5m sticks of fake cigarettes
Updated at 5.12pm:
Customs have seized 2.5 million sticks of suspected counterfeit cigarettes in a transshipment container, a spokesman said on Wednesday.
Before the seizure, the officers identified a container which appeared to have been transshipped on routes chosen so they would avoid customs, the spokesman said.
Officers on Wednesday morning searched a 20-foot transshipment container at Kwai Chung Container Terminal.
Inside the container, they found 2.5 million sticks of dutiable cigarettes worth about $3.75 million, the spokesman added.
The container had arrived in Hong Kong from Singapore passing through Yantian on the mainland ahead of shipment to Taiwan.
Customs investigations were continuing on Wednesday afternoon. No arrests have been made.
