Bill row led to acid killing, court told

Two off-duty restaurant managers threw acid over a colleague after she asked them to settle their bill at the restaurant in which they all worked, a court heard yesterday.

Siu Han-lin, 46, died in hospital two months after the attack in Tsim Sha Tsui's Crystal Jade Restaurant, the Court of First Instance was told.

Wong Chong-hoi, 44, is charged with her murder. The other alleged attacker, Chan Wing-sing, leaped to his death from a police station a day after the attack.

Prosecutor Alain Sham said Siu received burns to 50 per cent of her body in the attack on October 6 last year. She died of severe infections and pneumonia on December 5.

Mr Sham said Wong and Chan had entertained friends at the restaurant in Nathan Road in the early hours of October 6. They said they would settle the bill later that day but Siu, who was on duty, insisted they pay immediately.

Acid was thrown over her as she got out of a lift after finishing her shift at 4.30am. She shouted for help and told a security guard she had been attacked by Wong and Chan, the court was told.

The case continues today before Mr Justice Thomas Gall.
