Pouting Poulter out of fashion at Fanling
Poor pouting Ian Poulter. Not only did the Ryder Cup star miss the cut, he then had to sit and endure others modelling a line of golf clothes at the sponsor's Ladies' Day function yesterday.
The frustration was clearly etched on his youthful face. The pain of dashed hopes was soon exacerbated by watching a never-ending line of painfully thin models show off a line of golfing apparel. And he is the guy who has made a worldwide name for his line of outrageous pants and hairstyle.
No, Poulter was not a happy man. All he said as he walked off the golf course with a disappointing five-over-par 75 yesterday was: 'Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.' He did not want to dwell on his sorry display that included three bogeys, a triple-bogey and a birdie. That performance left him with a two-round total of five-over 145 and well beyond redemption. Arriving at the last hole for the day, the par-four 474-yard ninth, Poulter was two-over and still had a slim chance of salvaging his hopes.
But an errant drive saw him land on the right rough. His second shot then clipped a branch of a tree bordering the edge of the fairway and fell in the woods. Poulter was forced to hit sideways out on to the fairway, but because he used too much force, the ball landed on the other side of the fairway and in the woods again. To get out of this, he had to play left-handed and backwards. By the time he reached the green, he was already one shot in the red. A two-putt saw him end his Hong Kong sojourn in despair.
Matters took a turn for the worse when, along with other marquee names Nick Faldo and Zhang Lianwei, Poulter (pictured) had to fulfil obligations to sponsors and sit through the fashion show.
A man who shocked the world with his startling pair of Union Jack pants at this year's British Open at Royal Troon, and a red-white-and-blue Stars and Stripes ensemble at the US PGA Championship, had to then watch a bevy of girls and guys model golfing wear. We can only wonder what he thought of the mini-skirted female model as she sashayed through the tables of Omega invitees.
The star turns were expected to stay and present the prizes at a lucky draw, but the English pair - Poulter and Faldo - left after sitting for close to 30 minutes. Zhang stayed behind.
'They were only supposed to stay for 15 minutes, but the fashion show took a little longer then expected,' said apologetic organisers.
Faldo left swaying his hips from side to side, like a model. However, Poulter, the model golf player, just stalked off. He was not happy.
