A coach driver was killed and six people were injured in a traffic accident on Lantau Island on Tuesday morning.

Shortly after 4.20am, a coach driven by a 32-year-old man was travelling along the first lane of North Lantau Highway towards the airport.

After passing through Penny?s Bay, it reportedly ran up an elevated lay-by designated for police vehicles. The coach dashed across the three lanes of the carriageway and bumped into a central divider.

The vehicle then turned on its side and rammed the railings nearby, a spokesman said.

Upon impact, the driver was hurled from the coach and fell onto the carriageway in the opposite direction. He was seriously injured and certified dead at the scene.

The spokesman said six coach passengers ? aged between 23 and 46 ? were injured. Of these, two men and two women were rushed to Princess Margaret Hospital while one man and one woman were taken to Yan Chai Hospital, respectively.

Police are still investigating the accident.
