2 policemen killed in clash with workers

A violent clash between traffic police and more than 100 construction workers in Shanxi has left two police dead and another three seriously injured, state media and local officials say.

The clash occurred in Wanrong county, Yuncheng city, on Sunday afternoon when at least seven trucks loaded with workers from China Railway First Group armed with clubs and bricks arrived at the local traffic police headquarters, the Shanxi Evening News reported. Two policemen were killed after being hit by trucks, a public security officer said.

The workers, from a road project, were apparently angered by the police handling of a hit-and-run accident allegedly involving a company truck.

Despite the company's co-operation, dozens of police raided the project office on Sunday morning and roughed up and detained nine employees, including the project manager and chief engineer.

Fearing that any delay in the project could postpone wage payments, the workers drove to the police station to demand the release of those arrested.
