Can you beat $88,888.88 for this stamp?

Bidding for the 10 lucky number eights rare stamp we are auctioning for Operation Santa Claus unsurprisingly stalled yesterday after Wednesday's auspicious top bid of $88,888.88. The figure was a staggering 10 times our reserve price of $8,888.

But you still have five days to put in your own lucky bid for our unique Christmas gift - and give a huge boost to Operation Santa Claus.

The once-in-a-century 80 pfennig stamp was issued at 8am, on 8/8/1988 in Blindheim in Bavaria, Germany. The town's postal code is 8888. The first-day cover of the rare stamp issue has drawn huge interest in Hong Kong after being donated by Austrian resident here Erwin Hardy.

Our auction closes at 5pm on Tuesday. Send bids by e-mail only with your name, address and phone number to [email protected]. The highest bid by 5pm each day will be published in the City section next day. The winning bid will be announced in the Post next Thursday. All proceeds go to Operation Santa Claus.
